Laurie McClain & Severin Browne

  • Underground Exchange Ojai 1016 West Ojai Avenue Ojai, CA, 93023 United States (map)

Join us Saturday, July 28th for a very special performance by singer/songwriters Laurie McClain & Severin Browne. Born in southern California, Laurie announced to her family at age six she would be a singer when she grew up. The pop music radio of the late '60s carried a heavy dose of folk music, and Laurie gravitated to that sound. Her mother was a devoted Johnny Cash fan and together they watched the eclectic Johnny Cash Show each week. This is where she first saw artists like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt, Melanie Safka & Merle Haggard perform live, which greatly influenced her musical tastes.
She heard a Joan Baez recording of the Leonard Cohen song, "Suzanne," and begged her father for a guitar so she could learn it. Soon after that Laurie began performing and hasn't stopped since. While Laurie accompanies herself expressively on guitar, ukulele and harmonica, it's her honey voice that soothes and her powerful lyrics that heal hearts. Reminiscent of 60s/70s folk, her songs are messages of hope for a weary world.
Severin comes from a very musical family. Severin has referred to his father as "The world's greatest unpublished songwriter." His brother, Jackson, is also a talented singer/songwriter who has recorded many albums for the Asylum/Elektra labels. In 1970, Severin auditioned some of his songs for Motown Records, not as a performer but as a staff writer. He remembers that Barry Gordy came into his session and asked if he wanted to make a record, to which Severin answered, "No." But at the young age of just 21, Severin got a contract with Motown Records. It took about eight months before he became the first white folk/country-type singer on Motown's growing white roster.  Severin's subject matter always reflects his growth as an individual as well as an artist and has named his greatest music influences as Paul Simon, James Taylor, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and his brother, Jackson. Severin Browne performs solo to packed house concerts, intimate listening rooms, and crowded bars. He is a sought-after guest in many singer-songwriter festivals and shows, and is regarded as one of the most accomplished performers in the Los Angeles area. Severin’s easy manner in front of an audience makes it seem as if playing his guitar and singing his songs is effortless and second-nature. His brilliant lyrics invite listeners into the songs while his solid melodies carry the story from one note to the next. Join us for this enchanting night of music at 7:30, and there is at $20 suggested donation at the door.
