Friday November 16th we welcome back the husband and wife duo of Complicated Animals! Complicated Animals is the Los Angeles based Indie duo of Monica da Silva and Chad Alger. Their 6-song EP “In This Game” (2015), was written and recorded in a cabin in the woods in Michigan. “In This Game” received rave reviews from blogs and journalists, and was called “a 6 song masterpiece” and the “beginning of a new sound” by PopMatters. “In This Game” fuses Indie Pop with vintage-Brazilian Bossa Nova into Complicated Animals’ self-coined genre, Indie Nova.
Inspired by the changing seasons, and their mutual love for vintage films and music, da Silva and Alger really wanted to get back to the art of songwriting on “In This Game”. “We really wanted the songs to unfold like a story would”, says Alger. They took their time to carefully choose each and every sound that has gone into their collaboration, making sure that the songs evolve like the seasons. The first single “Phoenix” is a hypnotic, upbeat indie pop song with vamping piano, a strong beat, and sexy vocals. "I woke up with the idea for 'Phoenix' in my head. I've always felt very drawn to the story of the Phoenix, because it is such a strong symbol of rebirth. We weren't sure how we were going to produce this at first, but after playing around with some piano sounds, Chad came up with the idea to do something grainy and repetitive, almost like a sampled hip-hop track," says da Silva. Ojai's favorite classic Latin guitar player and singer Francisco Leon will be opening the show at 7:30. There is a $15-$20 suggested donation at the door.
